Mackerel is a common name applied to a number of  different species of fish, including, but not exclusively,  Scomber japonicus and Trachurus picturatus murphyi.  They occur in all tropical and temperate seas. Common  features of mackerels are a slim, cylindrical shape and  numerous finlets on the dorsal and ventral sides behind  the dorsal and anal fins. Mackerel is an oily fish (  excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids) and are an  important recreational and commercial fishery.
